AOL just announced that beginning January 12, 2009 Skydrive would cease operation and for all those using the service to download their files. Skydrive was a great online storage facility apart from a 5GB space and being free at that, it also has a desktop utility that can be used to upload and dowload files. Just recently they introduced an Adobe AIR based desktop utility making the UI more friendly.

Heeding AOL’s warning I downloaded all my files to my PC and started looking for a replacement. Then I remembered that Microsoft’s Skydrive which the last time I checked was still in beta version. Skydrive is now out of beta and is being bundled as part of Windows Live package.

If you have a Hotmail, MSN or Live ID then all you got to do is to sign in and for those who don’t registration is free. Though it doesn’t have the desktop utility or the cool AIR-based utility that Skydrive, it has a downloadable ActiveX plugin that makes it easier to drag and drop files for upload.

Another thing that Skydrive has it going for itself is the announcement of an increase from the current 5GB to 25GB.

This is my first post using Wordpress for iPhone and what is cool about this is I am using an iPod touch 2nd generation. I am still waiting for Apple to come out with an OS update that would address the issue on disabling the predictive text. It is kind of disappointing that Apple didn’t put the option of being able to turn off predictive text when all other major cellphone manufacturers have it installed.

There are rumors that OS 2.2 would have it, but until then I would have to stick to my iPod touch.

Yahoo Messenger for Vista, now discontinued, offered richer graphics that took advantage of Vista

It looks like Yahoo! has discontinued the further development of its Vista-optimized Instant Messenger which is now in beta version. So far this has been the slickest and meanest looking IM that Yahoo! had released and to learn that it would no longer come out with further updates for its current beta version is indeed sad news to Vista users.

This is one of the first softwares that was made to take advantage of Windows Presentation Foundation, the graphics layer that powers Windows Vista. The reason that Yahoo gave was that this decision will help Yahoo increase efficiencies and deliver one consistent, full-featured solution for Windows users–whether they are using XP or Vista.

The problem with that for me is that sooner or later people would upgrade to Vista or Windows 7 which would also have the graphics layer of Vista.
